The opening speech for the Dongdaemun history park

Today is a memorable day.

For a long time, we thought and heard about the need of landmarks for Seoul. When we ask foreigners about the impressions of Seoul, most of their answers are N-tower of NamSan or Kim-chi.

From those common responds, we realize that we have to have symbols for Seoul. If you travel abroad, you should go to the sights of each city. Just like that, we need a symbolic place of Seoul.

I am convinced that this Dongdaemun history park could be the representational place. And, DDP was planned with this intention.

Today, the park is opened to the public, and we can see the half of the success.

As a matter of fact, someone might be unaccustomed to the new buildings.

In the left side of your seat, there is a 600 year-old castle which has the beauty of the original figure. With 600 years of history and the cutting edge of the 3 dimensional-nonorthogonal-curvature building, this history park is introduced to the public.

Two years later from now, the Design Plaza will be constructed in the space behind this fence. And this place will have its reputation of the latest model of the building, which includes both history and the most advanced technology.

And also this place will lead the design industry, which is one of the new growth factor of South Korea.

Across space and time, the eastern castle and the western style of the buildings are coexisted in the same place. There are no boundaries and no beginnings. You can only see the whole space which flows like water in nature. This transcendental concept of space and time, eastern and western culture, and the past and the future(high technology) represents the symbol of Seoul.

As you know, Seoul, the centre of South Korea, is the city of long history and high-end IT industries. They develop together and make competitive powers for Seoul. And this place, which is located in the middle of the city, will have a significant meaning of space and time, and eastern and western culture.

Many people helped us to accomplish this construction.

First of all, the baseball league supported the idea of the new building. And the city has constructed different sizes of the baseball stadiums in the several places of Seoul in compensation for the league’s concession. Second, almost 1000 flea markets, which have been generated since the demolition of the soccer field, moved to Sinsul-Dong. Seoul city has made Pung-mul market to help those merchants, and the new market will be expected to be a famous sightseeing of Seoul with various items. In addition, the shops near this site accepted the new building construction so that the city has helped them to move out. Moreover, because of the cooperation of the street merchants, streets are cleaned up.

However, we still have some problems with merchants, and we will solve them with mutual understanding. The scene of demonstrations symbolically reveals many obstructions throughout the construction procedure.

During the past 3 years we could overcome those difficulties with many corporations.

Thanks for the considerable helps of Ki Sung Kim, the chairman of the city council and the council members, Dong Il Jung, the director of Joong-Gu office, and the director of Joong-Gu police station and policemen.

We are trying to Re-design Seoul. The 3 keywords are Green, Blue, and History. We will develop green spaces and the watersides in the historical context for the next generation and the foreigner who might visit Seoul.

Many people continue to make their efforts to symbolize the spatial values of Seoul which can show the cultural confidence of 600 year old history of Seoul, and 2000 year old of history of South Korea.

In addition to the Dongdaemun history park, other works based on history will be finished by this city government (of the 4^th popular election) in this year: Gwanghwamun square, which is already opened recently, and the Seodaemun independence park, which will be opened tomorrow.

Seoul will improve the quality of the civilian life and increase the city’s competitive power by Re-design. I assure that Seoul could be a hub of the northeast Asia through these works, and the world will want to visit, invest and live in Seoul.

Sport Memorial is a bit slow this week. Contractor works really hard on the roof slab.

The Loading Dock ramp is done. Much bigger than I thought.

Supports for the Energy Center Ceiling Slab are going up.

Ramp access to the car is on the way.

The Emergency Electricity room is on the way.

Slab for the Relic Museum is just finished.

The F1 slab of Event Hall just started.

The ramp to the roof of Relic Msueum is on the way.

Car Park B4 level is extended. Car Ramp is finished.

Slab of theDesign Gallery is finished and the wall is on the way.

Relic Msuem B1 slab is done and the workers are casting the underground drainage.

Ramp above the Design Gallery is under construction.

First concrete pour for Sport Memorial. The workers are using wood hammers and small vibrators on the formwork.

Internal formwork - it is twisting!!! It will have to be rebuilt.

Week 5

Cooling tower slab is starting.....Car Ramp entrance is getting there as well.

Car Ramp to the loading dock is half way there.

The Relic Zone by the Sport Memorial is flattened and gets ready for the relic relocation.

Relic Museum B2 Level is finished.

Design Gallery slab is almost there and the formwork is finsihed.

Problem at the south-west upper corner fo the sport memorial formwork.

After plenty of filling and sanding, the interior formwork is getting a bit better. Lots more work required.

Setting out issues with the formwork. Let's hope these could be improved for the next one!

Just finished the elevator pit of the Relic Museum. Moving on to B1 level....

Event Hall mechanical room is finished. Very fast!!!

Next to the mechanical room, the workers laid the re-bars for the Event Hall B2 Slab.

Formwork of Sport Memorial is going up very quickly.

No 3D CNC milled formwork as specified. Instead we have old school handmade formwork.
